Private Discipline

Everyone likes to be treated with dignity. Our students deserve to be respected at all times, even when we are disciplining them. When an issue comes up in class, try to first discreetly communicate your intentions. If this doesn’t work, then ask that the student see you after class for a discussion about the incident. There are many reasons for you to do this.

1. You and the student will get some “think” time on the incident.

2. Other students are not influencing the discipline process. Most students need an audience to act out.

3. This process shows we care about the student.

4. This process allows other issues to be discussed. This is a good time to “listen” to some possible things that are underlying issues for the student.
